List of Documents Required To Secure A Study Abroad Loan

List of Documents Required To Secure A Study Abroad Loan

Incomplete documentation is one of the key reasons why education loan applications are rejected.

To avoid getting your application trashed due to missing papers, keep all necessary documents ready.

What does ‘all’ mean here?
The documents required for a study abroad loan vary based on the course, country, and the lender you are applying to. Documentation also differs depending on whether it is a collateral-backed or non-collateral-backed loan and whether the co-borrower is a salaried professional or a business owner.

So be sure to read the specific application requirements of the lender before submitting your application.

However, we do have a generic list of documents that you should keep handy while applying for international education loans.

Spoiler Alert: You might not need all of these documents for your application. But having them available and accessible would definitely save you from last-minute panic attacks or worse, having your education loan application turned down.

Important points to note while submitting documents to secure an international educational loan

You might have 20-50 papers lying in front of you while submitting a study abroad loan application. And it is easy to get confused.

Here are a few things to keep in mind while sorting and arranging the documents.

● Some documents work for multiple purposes.
For example, you’d be submitting your class X mark sheet for academic purposes. That also works as an age-proof. So you can skip your birth certificate, get two copies of the class X mark sheet and use it for academic as well as age proof. Similarly, for address proof, you can use your Aadhar/PAN/Voter’s ID card too if it has the same address. No need for a driving license.
● Never submit an original document for a study abroad education loan application.

Only the fully-filled loan application form has to be original. Use self-attested photocopies of the rest of the documents. However, in the case of a collateral-based education loan, the original documents related to immovable or movable collateral have to be submitted to the lender.
● Passport size photographs are not ‘documents’ but vital for your education loan application.
2 passport-size photos of the primary applicant and 2 of the co-borrower are standard. You might also want to keep a couple of extra copies handy.
● Having more than the needed documents ready with you is great. Submitting unwanted documents to lenders, not so much.
Submitting unwanted documents might complicate the process, make it difficult to identify the required ones, and also put off the loan officer, resulting in a rejection. Before submitting any study abroad loan application, check the official list of required documents. And submit only what is needed.

What Is Margin Money for Education Loan And Why It Matters?

What Is Margin Money for Education Loan And Why It Matters?

Margin money for an education loan is the amount that you pay from your pocket.

While taking out a loan to study abroad, you can sponsor yourself entirely from the loan, or partly from the loan. In the case of the latter, the other part comes from your savings. That part is known as the margin money.

Why is margin money important?

Because it reduces the amount of interest you have to pay.

This is one of the most prevalent reasons that aspiring Indian students get a couple of years of work experience and save up some money. This alleviates a lot of mental agony while being a foreign student in an expensive city.

What is the margin money amount?

It depends on many factors. As every profile is unique, it will serve you well to inquire the same with the moneylender.

RBI has informed that a 15% of margin money may be insisted on students going abroad for study.

There are certain banks and non-banking financial institutions that are happy to sponsor you completely for your higher studies abroad. This is a good decision for the bank as they will be getting more interest.

From your perspective, you have to keep your current financial situation in mind. Insisting on a higher margin money amount might hurt your family’s way of living and will give you lots of stress when you are abroad.

On the other hand, if you get a higher loan amount, it will cost you a bit more as interest in the long term. Most students choose to pay less as the extra bit of interest seems little in comparison to the loan amount.

How does choosing the right college affect your margin money?

The college or university where you plan to do your Masters determines the following things:

1. Your future earning potential. Reputed colleges and universities give their students better opportunities as their alumni network is stronger and they have better relationships with various companies in different industries.
2. Your cost of living. If your college/university is in an expensive city, you will be spending a lot there on rent and amenities.
3. Your international travel expenses. Through the course of your study, you will be traveling back and forth to India. This, although by a relatively smaller margin, affects the money you will be spending.
4. Scholarships from foreign universities. A lot of students are benefited by financial assistance in the form of scholarships. The probability of you getting a scholarship depends on which college you have applied to.

All the above factors decide the loan amount for studying abroad. At GradRight we will send personalized college recommendations to you.

After you roughly calculate or estimate your loan amount, you need to secure the best loan. The best loan will alleviate your financial stress as you go abroad and start a new chapter in your life.

Margin Money for Education Loan

Not to mention, the availability of the right individuals and network in the banks are the most important factors. Keeping all of that in consideration, it will at least take you weeks, if not months, to get a quotation from one bank.

Of course, you will need multiple options to make sure that you are making the right choice. That translates to you running around banks for months at a time.

Every bank, NBFC, and private money lending organization has “experts” who are supposed to help you secure the loan with lowest interests.

We will have your loan applications examined anonymously by experts.

At FundRight, we believe in empowering students who want to study abroad. One of the ways we do that is by hiding certain details that might get you any biased advice.

Get low interest, no collateral loans

For a lot of reasons, no collateral loans are preferred. It doesn’t put any of your property on the line, it reduces the long term risks, etc. But there is a catch. No collateral loans often come with a lot of interest.

This puts most applicants off as the financial advantage gets nullified. We have understood that problem and have solved it.

Secure low interest, no collateral loans with FundRight.

Why The Best Study Abroad Education Consultants Are Not Good For You

Why The Best Study Abroad Education Consultants Are Not Good For You

The number of Indian students going abroad has been increasing steadily over the past decade.
The reasons are not far to seek:
      ● Better education infrastructure
      ● Updated curricula and knowledgeable faculty
      ● Possibility of a job after graduation
      ● Chance of permanent residency visa
Students and their parents are willing to go to any lengths to fulfill their dream.
The next stage is quite predictable.
They are in the clutches of nefarious education consultants who do not offer the guidance that is anticipated.
What are the pitfalls of employing study abroad consultants? We analyze why the best education consultants are not what you need to go abroad.

Who are study-abroad consultants?

The process of going abroad has three separate phases:
      1. The first is getting admission to a foreign university
      2. The second is arranging for the funds
      3. The third is receiving the proper visa

Each of these can be split into several smaller tasks.
In short, it is a complicated procedure with several moving parts.
Most students don’t know much about the institution where they want to pursue a degree course.
They have a vague idea that they want to go to the US and study Master’s at a good university. But ask most aspiring graduates if they have a few in mind and they would be stumped. Ask them why not a university in Canada and they would have no reply.
There is an even greater lack of knowledge about funds. Numbers get thrown around—it costs ₹40 lakhs to complete a Master’s in physics at Berkeley.
It is normal for parents to get worried and seek “professional” help from study abroad consultants. This is where things start to go wrong.
The consultants promise to help with admission, funds, and visa. In India, there is a middleman for everything under the sun. Foreign education is no different. In fact, it provides rich pickings.
If, in return, they offered correct and unbiased information, it would probably have been worth it. But that is too much to ask for.
Unlike the developed world, where one needs a license to practice almost any profession, the unchecked proliferation of fake agencies and consultants is a cause for concern.
SelectRight helps you avoid shady consultants. It is a platform that offers unbiased information and helps students make an informed choice.

Why you must avoid study abroad consultants?

Let’s examine the facts. Before you sign up with an agency, you need to know more. Know what to avoid and look for.
We shed light on the pitfalls of employing educational consultants for going abroad.

Lack of information about the institution

You would expect that a top-notch education consultant would have all possible information at their fingertips.
If you, as a parent, are willing to spend ₹50 lakhs for your child’s dream, you need to know the alternatives.
At the very least, you would like to know about the top ten institutions in the USA and five more in UK and Canada.
      ● What are the requirements for admission?
      ● What is the acceptance rate?
      ● TOEFL/IELTS score and SAT/GRE score required
      ● What are the courses they offer?
      ● What are the specializations?
      ● Scope of on-campus jobs and assistantship
      ● Availability of accommodation on and off campus
      ● How many international students study there?
But the replies you receive from study abroad consultants would be surprisingly vague. The reason being none of these agencies have first-hand interaction with any institution. That would not be a problem except that they pretend that they have.
All they are doing actually is reading a brochure someone mailed them.
Question to ask—How many students have you sent to these institutions in the past five years and can any of them be available to speak with?
Lack of information about the cost
Going abroad for studies is expensive. Most universities have scholarships and bursaries for international students, but it is limited. Often such financial aid would cover no more than 20% of the expense.
There is another factor at play. Financial aid might be available after the student begins education.
During the process of admission, proof of funds has to be shown, though all of it might never be needed.
You need an educational consultant to give you facts and figures that are reasonably accurate. There might be a slight cost overrun, but not much.
In real life, all that you would get is a ballpark figure. A vague sentence “somewhere between ₹40 and 60 lakhs”.
And also a subtle hint that if you are not willing to cough it up, many are waiting to do so.
Going abroad to study cannot mean uncertainty. For most middle-class folks, the difference between ₹40 and 60 lakhs is quite considerable.
SelectRight, on the other hand, gives accurate and firsthand knowledge.
Question to ask—Can we have an estimate that is accurate to within 10% of the cost of tuition and board?
Concealing own interest
This is the worst possible offense. Yet it happens all the time.
All foreign universities are not esteemed. They lack students, which means they lack income.
These institutions have a tie-up with education consultants from not only India but also the rest of South Asia—Bangladesh, Pakistan, etc.
They send students and get a fat commission.
The student gets easy admission to a foreign university with minimum effort. Low scores on SAT/GRE and TOEFL are overlooked.
The university earns from tutoring a foreign student at an inflated tuition fee.
Yet at the end of the day, when it comes to the job market, the degree has little or no incremental value over one in India at a fraction of the cost.
Sadly, education and noble pursuit of wisdom has been turned into this charade, but it is true.
Question to ask—Why are you recommending one university over others?
They are expensive
The last point, but not least. Education consultants would charge a hefty fee for their services.
The fee for guidance and facilitation can be upwards of a lakh.
That is indeed a lot for a suggestion about which university to study at and a few basic facts about the visa process that can be obtained using Google.
What a student has to remember is that his ability and acumen are the reasons he is going abroad. Once he knows this fact well, there is no longer any need to pay a vast agency fee. The acumen he showed to ace his exams are enough to help him fill up the visa and scholarship forms.
Question to ask—Is it a flat fee or does it vary with the school where the student gains admission?
Common education consultant scams
1. They offer admission to universities that are not recognized. Ensure that the university has the seal of approval from the department of education.
2. Never visit any agency that guarantees you admission or a visa. No one can guarantee admission to a good institution. The visa process is lengthy, and no one can claim to have an inside track.
3. Find out if the course you are admitted to has accreditation. In India, all courses are certified by bodies such as UGC and AICTE. The same for every developed nation.
4. Ask the institution through email and later video call (if possible) your queries about accreditation, tuition cost, and boarding expenses.
5. Do not hesitate to ask questions about the school and the overseas education consultant on Quora and Reddit.

Find a trusted partner

The education consulting business has grown substantially. Naturally, it has invited unsavory characters who want to make a quick buck at your expense.
Nothing is easier than dangling a dream and making money.
Choose a trusted education consultant.
What to look for?
    ● Transparency—An authentic overseas education consultant would be equally open regardless if you want to study in US, UK, or Australia and have no preferences. In other words, they have no axe to grind.
    ● Complete data security and confidentiality—Data about your family income, and your test scores are private and should remain so. At no time should it be used for marketing or to reach out to you with offers.
    ● Customer support—They must have trained personnel available during working hours. Any attempt to avoid questions must be suspect. If you hear that your contact person is “in a meeting” more than twice, make new plans.
    ● Expert pool—Experts don’t depend on brochures. They have worked for years sending many students abroad. Input from them is indispensable.
    ● Visa guidance—You might need help with filling up the visa form quickly and correctly. The F-1 form runs into several pages. If you are confused, the education consultant should have no trouble providing an answer.
    ● No inflated promises—This is the biggest one to watch out for. A genuine study abroad consultant would never make you a promise. Consider it a red flag and make a hasty exit.

The University of Michigan is known for excellent scientific research and produces some of the world’s best engineers. Earlier in this article we have shed some light on how much time and effort you have to invest to find the university that is right for you. It is a difficult decision because a lot is on the line. For most Indian students who want to study abroad, it is a financial decision.

What Is DS-160 Form For Students Visa, Requirements, Process Introduction

What Is DS-160 Form For Students Visa, Requirements, Process Introduction

You have secured admission to a coveted US university. The funds are also arranged for. All that you need is a student’s visa and a few small formalities and away you go to a new life abroad in the wealthiest country in the world.
Before that happens, you have to fill out the visa application. As a student, you are eligible for a non-immigration visa.
To cope with the tedious process, you need to know everything about it. All the minute details must be crystal clear so that there is no error.
After all, you would arrive in the US with about a week to spare before your classes begin. If you have to redo the visa process, it might take a month and you would miss important lectures and make a poor impression on the bad faculty. SelectRight has in place a team of experts to guide you through the process.
Without further ado, we present a comprehensive guide to DS-160 form.

What is the DS-160 form?

The State Department website calls the Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application Form DS-160. Otherwise, it is known as DS-160 without the prefix.
It sounds ominous but means visa application form.
DS-160 is an electronic form that you have to fill up before you visit the respective consulate for an interview.
As a student, you would be looking for an F-1 or student’s visa.
It is exciting to study abroad, and this is just the first step to the fulfillment of your dream.
You have to know how the DS-160 application for a student’s visa works, what information to provide, and the steps involved.

Who needs a DS-160 form?

Note that DS-160 is not only for students but for anyone who wants a visa—travel, work, business, marriage (spouse) but is not migrating permanently.
In simple words, anyone traveling to the USA but not migrating to the USA needs to fill up the DS-160.
The DS-160 is basically a comprehensive database about a person.
It not only aids in issuing visas but the presented facts also help U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the United States Department of Homeland Security (the equivalent of the Home Ministry in India).
If you have one type of visa and are migrating to another, you do not need to type out every detail again. Such as if you are a student on an F-1 visa and during the last semester get sponsored by Adobe for an H1B visa, there is no need to provide all the details once more. The new DS-160 form can import data from an application file. More on that later or better still ask an expert at SelectRight.

Where to fill out the DS-160 form?

You can find the form on the Consular Electronic Application Center website.
You can access the site only using Internet Explorer 11 or higher.
Alternatively, you can use Firefox and Google Chrome (version 58 and above).
At this moment, Apple Safari and Microsoft Edge cannot be used.

Before you start make a note of these facts

● The website speed varies considerably. Be patient when you click Next.
● It is best if you Save the application every few minutes. If there is a disconnection, you can start from where you were interrupted.
● Note the Application ID provided at the start. If you are interrupted, you would need it to have access to the submitted data. Otherwise, you would have to start out all over.
● The server times out after 20 minutes of inactivity. Keep this in mind in case you are interrupted by a phone call and away for a while. It is best if you switch off any devices that might distract you.

Instructions to fill DS-160 form

It is not difficult at all. But it is lengthy and has many parts. The website estimates that an average of 90 minutes is necessary for the task.
● You do not need to fill it out by yourself. Anyone appointed by you can do it on your behalf. SelectRight can make the process easier for you.
● The Sign Application button should be clicked by the applicant. Even if someone else fills in the details, you are responsible for any error.
● You have to provide the location from where you will be applying for the visa. There is a CAPTCHA code. Click on Start an Application.
● The next page would ask you to accept the terms and conditions. The lower half also provides you with an Application ID. Note it down since it allows you access time and again over the next month.
● You will be asked to fill up a security question – What is the given name of your mother’s mother. Note that a security question is to protect your application and the answer may or may not be correctly provided.
The form is divided into the following parts:
● Personal I
● Personal II
● Travel Information
● Travel Companions
● Previous US Travel
● Address and Phone Number
● Passport Details
● US Contact
● Family
● Work / Education / Training
● Security and Background
On the whole, the information asked for relates to:
● Name
● Age
● DOB
● Place of birth
● Marital Status
● Address
● Phone Number
● Citizenship
● Passport Details
● Purpose of Trip
● Type of Visa
● Parent’s Name
● Name of any relative in the US
● Occupation
● Employer
● Languages Spoken
● If you have a history of mental disorder
● If you have a criminal history
and similar queries.
For most applicants, for an F-1 visa, the answer would be a negative.
Once you have filled it a preview would be shown with the answers filled out. Read it carefully because any error would require many weeks to correct.
At the end click the Sign Application button. You would be shown a confirmation that the form has been successfully submitted. The page is a printout with a bar code and your application number. You need to carry it to the embassy or consulate.

Documents needed to complete the DS-160 form

● Passport
● Travel Itinerary (not mandatory for an F-1 student’s visa)
● Details of your last five trips to the USA
● Curriculum Vitae (since your work history might be required)
● Those applying for an F-1 visa (students) would need a SEVIS ID number. It stands for Student and Exchange Visitor Information System. You can find it on the I-20 form issued by the school to which you have been admitted.
Note that filling up the DS-160 is not equivalent to receiving a visa. It is the first step to acquiring one.

How long can the DS-160 application be saved?

An incomplete DS-160 is saved for 30 days. If you have started on April 1, you have to complete it by April 30th.
After that, the data would be wiped and you would have to start all over again.
This does not apply to a completed DS-160 whose data is always available.

How to correct errors?

First, we would like to stress that you should be very careful so that errors don’t occur. That is why the visa application form allows you 30 days to complete it. If in doubt, find the right information and continue. If tired, rest and then return to the task.
But we are human and mistakes do happen.
There are two ways to rectify the situation.
● Retrieve the completed application and edit it. The system does allow it for a period of time.
● If that is not possible, disclose the error at the time of the interview and request a change.

Can I skip a question on the DS-160 form?

Most of the questions are mandatory and need a response.
The answers have to be in English only. The translation of the form is available but the fields have to be filled using English.
Questions that have Optional next to them can be left blank.
For some questions you can use Does Not Apply – e.g. US Taxpayer ID.
The great thing is you cannot leave a mandatory question black by mistake. The system would show a red prompt when you try to navigate to the next page if a mandatory field is empty.

How to save the DS-160 information locally?

You can save the entire file to your hard drive. Click the Save File as Application button and click Save when prompted.
When you need to apply for a new DS-160 you can auto-populate some fields by uploading the file. Option B will allow you to upload a previous DS-160.
Note that the DS-160 has changed from November 1, 2010. If you had filled up DS-160 before that date you should do it again.

Photo Requirements

You would be asked to upload a digital photo. You might also have to carry it with you for the interview.
● It has to be in color.
● No more than six months old.
● The head should be between 22 mm and 35 mm.
● The background must be white or off-white.
● Full face with a neutral expression and both eyes open.
● Eyeglasses are no longer allowed.
● Digital photo has to be 600 x 600 pixels.
● Print out has to be 2 inches x 2 inches.

Ending Tips

● Be careful. Be vigilant. Be mindful.
● Provide accurate information on the DS-160 form. If you don’t have the answer to a question, save and research rather than guess.
● Migration is a serious matter. Any delay would cost you a month or two and end up sabotaging your career.
There are 200,000 Indian students in the USA. If they can get it right, so will you.

Average Salaries of Graduates

Studying abroad is synonymous with taking an education loan for most Indian students. Therefore, before choosing a college/university or a field of study, it is crucial to calculate the ROI.

According to Payscale, the average salary for software engineers is more than $78k per year, which is higher than the national average of $63k.

Even though the average salary is $68k when all fields of study are concerned, the upper limit for software engineers and data analysts is $115k and $81k.

How to choose the best university to do your MS?

Georgia State University is a great place for you to do your MS. It is the second most innovative university in the US. It will give you an opportunity to conduct research in various fields of computer science and a chance to interact with some of the brightest minds in the world.

However, as an applicant, you know better than to put all your eggs in one basket. It is crucial to keep your options open by applying to multiple colleges and universities. That way, you will have multiple options to choose from and can choose the one right for you.

The best part is, that finding the right university is easy as A-B-C with SelectRight.

1. Find the college that is right for you

Hunting for the right college involves researching for hours. With SelectRight, we have reduced it to a few minutes. All you need to do is answer a few questions that will help us understand what you are looking for. Questions like what field of study you are interested in or whether you have any work experience, etc. These questions will help us send the right list of colleges for you. How do we do it? We collect data on 100+ parameters for each college in our database. Presently, our records contain 500 universities and are adding more regularly. After receiving your profile, we send you a personalized list of colleges or universities that will be right for your future. SelectRight sends college recommendations to your inbox within a few minutes.   By implementing data analysis, we ensure that you get the best choices to select from.

2. Save you time and money

College rankings and quality, budget, and academic records are some of the many things that you will have to keep in mind while hunting for a college to do Masters. That often leads you to read blog articles, watch videos, scour through websites of different colleges and universities, and take part in forum discussions. Here are some of the things that you might do while looking for the right college/university for studying in the US. 1.Watch videos on YouTube: This will take many hours. You will have to watch multiple videos on one college. Furthermore, you won’t know if the videos are authentic or sponsored by the universities.
  1. Read blog posts: The majority of blog posts are copies of others written in a different way. You will only get generic advice which will be the same for all the colleges you will read about.
  2. Ask your friends: They will tell you to “Google it” which will have the same outcome as the above two points. If they are studying or studied in the US, then they might give you some insight but that will be limited to one college.
In conclusion, the chances that you will pick the wrong college are high. This will lead you to waste time during research, spend more money while studying, and have lower returns. SelectRight’s recommendations are tailored for your needs. We have a simple five-step process for college hunting. Create your SELECT account and answer a few questions. We will take care of the rest for you.

3. Get unbiased advice

Our in-house experts will give unbiased advice to you. Education consultancies are known for tricking aspiring students by giving them advice that is not ideal for their careers. The primary reason is, that it is their business model. They are sponsored by universities to increase the application forms they receive. At SelectRight, we do things differently. First, the recommendations that you will receive will be automated and will be based on data. We believe in empowering our students by helping them make the best career choice. Second, when our in-house experts examine your profile, we hide all the information that could cause them to give you biased guidance.

4. Ask all your doubts

Studying in the US also means living there. A lot of aspiring Indian students who want to study abroad have little experience of living in a foreign country. You must have a lot of questions that you need to be answered before you land in the city of your university. On our Discord server, you can ask all your questions related to studying abroad. There you can directly interact with alumni and students who have been in your shoes. You will have direct access to all of them when you accept that invite. If they can’t answer your questions to your satisfaction, our experts will help you out.

5. We host events with colleges

After you select the college which is right for you, you will still have a few questions about the campus life, extracurricular opportunities, etc. SelectRight hosts exclusive events with universities worldwide. Events like those will give you a direct opportunity to interact with your future institution. You might have some questions that even our experts and network of alumni may not answer to your satisfaction. Through these Q&A events, you will have a chance to interact with your future university. Attending these events will give you an edge that most students won’t have.
